Our company runs pfSense into an ESXi instance, 2 vCPU (E3-1240 v6), 20GB RAM managing 650 devices behind it. We also use squid. Squid does not do any caching, just ACLs. It has around 1 million domains on squidguard lists. pfSense peaks around 14-16GB RAM usage due to squid/squidguard. CPU usage 20%-40%.
